Hi Dr Mercola, I have been taking statins since Oct 2012. In Oct 2012 my
cholesterol was 256. I decided to become a vegan, and started that
lifestyle on 1 Jan 2013. On 31 January I had my cholesterol tested, and it
was down to 134. Can I stop taking the statin? Thanks!

So you recommend statins for high familial cholesterol??Even for females?
Dr. Malcolm Kendrick in his book ”THE CHOLESTEROL CON” states that NO
women should take statins. I’m disappointed to note that two well-informed
people like you and he, should differ in this. I am a female with very high
familial cholesterol and wish advice would be clarified as I would be torn
between so many different opinions.

Since my husband had atrial flutter in 2/13 I have decreased his egg yolks
from 14 to 3 a week and he uses Smart Balance Butter that contains the
plant sterols, and he only eats french fries one day a week or less. Yet in
these 6 months his total cholesterol has risen from 151 to 178 and LDL from
92 to 116. What have I done Wrong with his diet? Oh started taking Losartan
for high blood pressure 6 months ago. Could this raise his cholesterol?

There is no reason to justify eating french fries ever for someone with
heart disease. Use regular butter not Smart Balance. Your husband needs
whole unprocessed foods, not the typical garbage purchased at a restaurant
or grocery store.

so if cholesterol is responsible for creation of new cell tissue and
hormone production, I gather from this that an elevated cholesterol level
means an increase in (or too much production of) hormones which can cause
unbalanced bodily function and increased heart rate, leading to a heart
attack? thank you Dr Mercola

Thank you for this information, I’m watching this to educate myself because
my husband has high cholesterol and I’m the one that cooks, so I need to
make sure I am careful on what I feed him….. !!!!

I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart (pun intended!) for this
life saving advice. I began following this regime a few years ago after
having a terrible reaction to rx’d statins. I almost gave up hope. But
diet, exercise, plus 2 G red yeast rice, 200 mg ubiquinol, vitamin D3, low
dose asprin, omega3 daily have rendered me healthier than ever. One
unexpected result of this regimen is the reaction to my age. When I tell
people I’m 70, they are visibly shocked. I’m told I look like I’m in my
thirties. Looks aside, the important thing is that I have the energy and
mental acuity of people half my age. Life is good. Thank you Dr. Mercola!

Exercise…… get off the couch…. get outside……. do
something……ride a bicycle or go for a walk. Some cities and states
encourage bikes………. they provide safe walking and biking lanes and
trails. Cities also should encourage businesses and apartments to provide
safe places to lock or store a bicycle. Encourage your elected officials to
do more. Speak up.. become an advocate for bicycle use in your city.
